The Simulation Argument
Nick Bostrom is the philosopher who set out the simulation argument in a 2003 paper. He argued that at least one of three statements is true. Humanity is very likely to die out before a much more advanced stage, or those civilizations are very unlikely to run many ancestor simulations, or we are almost certainly living in a computer simulation. The argument does not claim that we are inside a simulation. It says one of the three possibilities cannot be avoided, which is why later debates almost always start here. Which of the three is actually true is not settled by the argument alone.

Around 1989–1990, John Archibald Wheeler shortened an idea to the phrase “It from bit”. He argued that every physical thing, such as particles, fields of force, and even spacetime, gets its function, meaning, and existence from yes-or-no answers given by a measuring device, that is, from bits. The picture is that an immaterial source lies under the physical world, and that the universe is one in which observers take part. This does not mean a computer is running the universe. It says observation and information are the base of existence, and it is the sentence quoted on this site’s About page. The idea has inspired work in quantum information, but it is not itself a physical law confirmed by experiment.

In a 1967 paper and his 1969 book Rechnender Raum, Konrad Zuse proposed that the universe computes like a cellular automaton. Edward Fredkin coined the term “digital physics” in 1978, and he later preferred the name “digital philosophy”. In a 2002 book Stephen Wolfram argued that simple rules make complexity, and a 2020 project tried to model spacetime with hypergraph rewriting rules. The topic traces how people came to treat the universe as information or computation. Reception is mixed, and it is a set of approaches rather than one finished theory.

The holographic principle says the most information a region can hold depends on the area of its surface, not its volume. It grew out of the entropy of black holes. ’t Hooft proposed a kind of dimensional reduction in 1993, and Susskind gave it a string-theory reading in a 1994 paper. The picture is that a three-dimensional world is like the image of information written on a two-dimensional surface. Maldacena’s 1997 AdS/CFT correspondence is the most concrete version, and it gives the claim that the universe reduces to information a footing in physics. That version is about a space with a negative cosmological constant, and carrying it over to our universe is still an open problem.

He claims a “second law of infodynamics”: unlike entropy in thermodynamics, information entropy can stay the same or decrease. In an April 2025 paper he uses that law to derive Newtonian gravity and reads gravity as data compression, a computation that reduces information. He argues that this reading supports a universe that is being computed. This is a minority view, and there is no independent check yet. The electron-positron experiment he proposed has not been reported as carried out or confirmed, and both criticism and his reply are in print.

In a 2007 paper he argued that this follows if a physical reality exists apart from people and if mathematics is defined broadly enough. A 2014 book made the idea widely known outside research. It is one of the most radical forms of the claim that mathematics or information underlies reality. Whether the hypothesis can be tested is disputed. The argument in the paper is not the same thing as a result confirmed by observation.

On that view the universe can be seen as a giant quantum computer that computes itself. In a 2002 paper he calculated upper limits: the universe could have performed at most about 10^120 operations, and it could hold about 10^90 bits. A 2006 book introduced that picture to a general audience. This is not a claim that an outside simulator exists. The figures are ceilings, not a measurement that the universe has in fact done that computing.

In 2012, Beane, Davoudi and Savage analyzed a universe that was a numerical simulation on a lattice. They found that the strongest limit comes from the high-energy end of the cosmic-ray spectrum, and that the pattern of the highest-energy cosmic rays might show the lattice as a break in rotational symmetry. In 2007 John Barrow explained that a simulation might sometimes show glitches and small changes. It is a classic attempt to make the simulation hypothesis into something science could test. No conclusive trace has been reported, and these limits rule out only simulations of one particular design.

The idea aims to do for flat space what Maldacena's 1997 AdS/CFT duality did for anti-de Sitter space: to describe the whole 4D universe from information on a 2D celestial sphere infinitely far away, where the debris of particle collisions is marked as points. Pasterski admits that she cheats, because her space is not expanding the way the real universe does, and, with Justin Kulp at Stony Brook University in New York, she extended the translation from single particles to multiple particles. Her group also compared entanglement on the boundary with the geometry of flat space, and in their models the boundary entanglement was reduced compared with AdS/CFT. Possible tests include the gravitational-wave spin memory effect, which the space observatory LISA, expected to launch within a decade, could look for, and patterns in how energy is distributed in LHC collisions, treating a detector such as CMS as the holographic sphere. She says she does not take it literally that she lives in a hologram, but that it is powerful to ask the question, and she calls the next Einstein label hype.

It reviews quantum-information approaches to black hole evaporation, focused on the Page-time paradox and the Hayden-Preskill model. That model treats a black hole as a finite quantum system whose dynamics is a quantum circuit, and the paper reports that Hayden and Preskill called this an information mirror. The authors list the model's assumptions, starting from the central dogma that, seen from outside, a black hole is an ordinary unitary quantum system. They highlight two roles of entanglement: fast scrambling that protects information, and pre-existing entanglement used as a resource to recover it. They argue that this operational use of information answers earlier philosophical objections, because it is not based on an observer's ignorance and does not treat information as a substance. They say explicitly that their slogan does not mean black holes are quantum information; they side with Timpson's critique of informational immaterialism, Wheeler's It from bit taken literally; and they note that the assumptions are not directly supported by experiment.

The paper, by Philipp Dorau and coauthors in Physical Review Letters, is titled From Quantum Relative Entropy to the Semiclassical Einstein Equations, and the article gives the identifier 10.1103/lmq8-nsty. It says the work rebuilds Ted Jacobson’s 1995 derivation of Einstein’s equations from thermodynamics, using quantum relative entropy instead of classical entropy. Coauthor Albert Much is quoted as saying that this quantity, evaluated at a horizon, equals the energy flowing across that horizon, and that with the Bekenstein-Hawking relation between entropy and area it leads to the equations for how quantum matter curves spacetime. The authors say the ingredients of the link between information and gravity were already known, and that the novelty is a rigorous derivation in place of heuristic argument. The article treats the result as a clue toward quantum gravity rather than a finished theory or an immediate application, and it quotes Much saying they are trying to extend it toward full quantum gravity.

He explains the holographic principle as the claim that measuring a region’s surface is enough to know its contents, and he traces it to the Bekenstein-Hawking result that black-hole entropy grows with area rather than volume, and to Leonard Susskind’s 1990s proposal that a black hole is a hologram. He presents the late-1990s AdS/CFT correspondence as a mathematical fact that an anti-de Sitter interior and a conformal field theory on its boundary are the same world, and he quotes a skeptic saying there is no mundane way to explain that special case. Our universe, he writes, is an accelerating de Sitter space and has no such boundary, so physicists split over whether the correspondence says anything about the real world. Latham Boyle, at the University of Edinburgh, questions the holographic reading of black-hole entropy and wants to separate an entropy that counts volume from an entanglement entropy that counts area. Wood says he leans toward the holographers, while also reporting that there is no agreement on whether the surface, the volume, or something else is the real thing, and that a more radical picture in which time itself drops out still has neither a working theory nor hard evidence.

It is an extract from the Lost in Space-Time newsletter, about a three-year search that began when her youngest child asked whether we could be living inside a computer game, and the page points to her book How to Design a Universe, published by Bloomsbury in September 2026. She argues that a simulation of reality depends on the universe being wholly mathematical. The Standard Model and the Higgs boson, she writes, support that it is very mathematical, while neutrinos that change flavor, dark matter, and dark energy sit outside that model, and gravity still does not meet quantum mechanics. Against the 2016 remark she attributes to Elon Musk, that there is a one-in-billions chance this is base reality, she argues the chance is vanishingly low, because a perfect virtual universe would take an implausible amount of energy. She still will not tell her son that a simulation is impossible, since a simulation of only one person, with artificial intelligence filling in the rest, is not impossible, though she thinks scientists would run few of them. She agrees with David Chalmers that a virtual reality in which you feel free will, love, and laughter is as genuine as a real world, and that feeling real matters more than settling whether we are.

He argues that information is as basic as mass and energy. On his account, gravity is how the universe reduces the complexity of its information, which he describes as data compression. The essay’s main proposal is that this picture could address a crisis gravity poses for cosmology. It is his own contested view, not a mainstream consensus. Read it next to the paper that makes the same claim and next to the criticism of that claim.

This is a review in the Hankyung books section, filed on 7 August 2026 and printed on page A18. The book is a new volume by Park Kwon, a theoretical physicist and professor at the Korea Institute for Advanced Study, running 384 pages from the publisher Dongasia at a price of 22,000 won. The review says Park takes up an idea from Douglas Adams, in which the computer built to make sense of the answer 42 is the Earth. It reports his picture of each person as a calculator built for survival, his hope that connecting those calculators in parallel might solve hard problems, and his claim that the universe is an information system one can approach by calculation. The review follows that claim through the Morse-code scene in Interstellar, the appearance of pi inside the Gaussian distribution of a drunkard’s walk, and the calculating power of computers and quantum computers. It closes on a seventy-year-old Isaac Asimov story whose computer, after stars and humans are gone, says let there be light, and the reviewer writes that a reader need not fully agree with the author’s choice to end on that note.

Vazza calculated that simulating a world with our physics would take an enormous amount of energy. The commentary argues that his calculation aims at something much stronger than Bostrom’s original argument. What Vazza challenges is a full simulation of one shared world, computed from the bottom up. The reply is that Bostrom’s argument only requires rendering subjective experience. The paper appeared in the Journal of Physics: Complexity. He applies Turing’s theory of computation, in particular Kleene’s recursion theorem. The result is that if a universe can simulate us, we can simulate that universe in turn. The simple ranking of a higher universe and a lower one can then fall apart. This is a mathematical frame for the debate, not evidence that we are inside a simulation.

A Popular Science Korea article dated 31 October 2025 says a simulated universe has been claimed to be mathematically impossible. It reports that a team led by Mir Faizal at the Okanagan campus of the University of British Columbia said on the 30th, local time, that it had mathematically shown the universe we inhabit cannot be virtual reality. Faizal is quoted saying that if a simulation were possible, beings inside it could build simulations of their own, which would raise the chance that we are inside yet another one, and the article says the team then rejects that premise. On the account given here, computers calculate by finite rules and algorithms, while a quantum-gravity picture treats space and time as emergent from pure information, the basic laws and constants such as the speed of light and the charge of the electron, so stepwise calculation cannot reproduce them exactly. Using Gödel’s incompleteness theorem, the team concludes that a sufficiently rich and consistent system contains statements its own rules cannot prove, that physical law contains non-computable properties, and that the universe therefore cannot be implemented as an algorithm. Coauthor Lawrence Krauss is quoted saying a complete account needs a non-computational understanding beyond calculation, and the article says the paper appeared in the latest issue of the Journal of Holography Applications in Physics.

He uses the holographic principle and the link between information and energy. For the whole universe, the whole Earth, or even a low-resolution Earth, he finds that the energy is either physically impossible or astronomically large if the simulator shares our physics. The title’s claim is that it is nearly impossible we live in such a simulation. A simulator whose physics is very different is the exception. An April 2026 commentary replies that this calculation aims at a stronger target than Bostrom’s argument.

The guests are Kim Beom-jun, a professor in the physics department at Sungkyunkwan University, and Park Kwon, a professor in the physics faculty at the Korea Institute for Advanced Study. The description asks whether a future humanity might be testing us, and why quantum mechanics would lead to a simulation theory on which the world could be fake. In the conversation Park says he has long opposed the simulation hypothesis, but that he wrote a book about it because the idea still means something even if he disagrees. Kim says he does not agree if the claim is that we live inside a computer simulation, and he hears Park’s position as closer to the universe simulating itself. The episode then takes up Bostrom’s three possibilities, the thought that a finite speed of light bounds how much a simulation must compute, Popper’s point that an unfalsifiable claim is not science, and Wheeler’s participatory universe.

The picture is that the world we see is like the image of information written on a lower-dimensional surface. The clip is an entrance to the idea in the voice of one of the people who proposed it. The questions run longer than a short lecture, so the split among those three is easier to follow. This video, posted later, records a 2011 event on whether the universe is computation. Edward Fredkin, Markopoulos, Schmidhuber and Seth Lloyd take part. The hypothesis they debate is the digital-physics view that the universe is computation at bottom. Fredkin coined the term digital physics, and Lloyd holds that the universe processes information itself. A claim that an outside simulator exists is not the same as a claim that the universe is computation. It is a discussion among several researchers, not a lecture that delivers one person’s conclusion.

In this video Nick Bostrom explains the simulation argument himself. The core of the argument is that at least one of three things is true. Humanity dies out before a much more advanced stage, or advanced civilizations do not run many ancestor simulations, or we are almost certainly inside a simulation. He is not simply asserting that we live in a simulation. The claim is that one of the three branches cannot be avoided. The listing treats it as the canonical explanation of the argument, given by Bostrom himself.
